Review: The Palms Grill Cafe, Atlanta IL

The Palms Grill Cafe is a wonderful step back into the past. It first opened on Route 66 in downtown Atlanta in 1934. Providing home-cooked meals for hungry travelers and local residents, the restaurant quickly became a bustling meeting place.

For years, travelers along Route 66 mingled with townsfolk enjoying good food and good friends in a comfortable setting. And “The Grill” offered more than just delicious food, it also filled a social role in the community, holding bingo games and weekly dances. It even served as the town’s bus station — if you wanted to catch the Greyhound Bus, you just flipped the switch for the light on the bottom of the Grill’s large neon sign and the bus would stop there.

This ambiance has been marvelously recreated through a two-year restoration project by the folks from the Atlanta Public Library, with painstaking attention to detail. The Palms Grill Cafe re-opened in 2009 and, returned to its original luster, it is once again serving up blue plate specials to Route 66 visitors. While a hamburger may cost a bit more than the 25 cents it used to, its still a fair bargain for a hungry traveler!

The vintage-era decor makes dining here a pleasure. The food is solid American diner-style fare, freshly prepared and served by friendly folks who seem to genuinely want you to enjoy your meal. Just make sure to save some room for the homemade pies — including peach, blueberry, banana cream and coconut cream — which are a special treat.
