The challenge of organization…

So the trip is about 9 months off. Why are we starting to plan now?

Well, actually, the challenge is going to be how to balance proper planning with such a long long wait before departure.

Of course, there are those people who would just take the keys and get in the jeep and drive… But they would likely soon find out that they are missing something crucial… Or they would just have to spend lots of money to compensate for lack of good planning…

As we discussed while on our Point Lookout trip, organization will be critical for us. Three people living out of a jeep for six weeks… The recipe for chaos (and for lots of fun too, of course)…

How do we reduce the needs of modern life into what we can carry comfortably in the Jeep?

Well, we are lucky that we are doing this trip in the U.S. where there is always a walmart, or a kmart, or a costco somewhere close by. So we never really have to worry about provisioning the way we do when we are working in a developing country. And apart from the desert stretches, we don’t even have to obsess about water, etc. (I know Cactus Killer will be glad I am not bringing 20 gallons of water at a time, like i do when we’re on a project in Africa).

Still, that said, it doesn’t mean we don’t have to “edit” our packing lists down to the really important essentials…

And we have plenty of time now to debate what “essential” means…

Agreed that we should do a ‘triage” of stuff periodically!

Just looking in the back of the Jeep after you guys went back to Paris I found candy wrappers and un-eaten candy, beverage cans stuck between the seats, plus lots of other junk (and some stuff that is definitely not junk but shouldn’t be stuck between seats, such as binoculars, etc…) so yes, we need to make it much more orderly this trip because we are actually LIVING out of the jeep… and who wants to live in a garbage can?

i think we can make it part of our checklist whenever we break camp to go thru the jeep seats and throw away garbage? And maybe once a week do a bigger “triage”?

What do you think…? also, i think it is going to be crucial for everything to have a “place” so there are no loose plastic bags of stuff hanging around in the back (which would just fly away if we have the top down, btw)…
